Come Dream with Me Prom

The Story of the Come Dream with Me Prom

Every great tradition begins with a dream, and the Come Dream with Me Prom is no exception.

In 2011, Sherry Fuller turned one of life's greatest heartbreaks into something that has brought joy to thousands. After her daughter, Amanda Fields, passed away in 2009 without ever having the chance to attend her prom, Sherry imagined a special evening where no one would ever miss that experience because of a disability or special need. Standing before a group of volunteers, she simply asked them to "close your eyes and come dream with me." From that dream, the Come Dream with Me Prom was born.

The first prom was held in a Greenville hotel ballroom and was built on one simple promise. Every individual with physical, intellectual, or developmental disabilities deserves a night where they are celebrated, valued, and treated like the guest of honor. That promise remains unchanged today and will continue to guide the prom for generations to come.

At Honor for Heroes, we had already developed a strong relationship with the Special Olympics and the special needs community because their mission of serving others naturally aligned with our own mission of recognizing, supporting, and honoring those who make a difference in the lives of others.

When the prom paused during the COVID years, we knew something too special to lose was at risk. As plans began to bring it back, Honor for Heroes stepped in to help, first by providing support and securing donated meals for the event. It quickly became clear that the Come Dream with Me Prom deserved a strong foundation that would protect its future.

Working together with Area 14 Special Olympics and with the full blessing and support of founder Sherry Fuller, Honor for Heroes helped establish a governing committee and the two organizations assumed shared proprietorship of the Come Dream with Me Prom. Most importantly, we made a commitment that Sherry's story, Amanda's legacy, the name of the prom, and its founding purpose would always remain at the heart of everything we do.

Today, that dream continues to grow. The Come Dream with Me Prom welcomes hundreds of participants and over a hundred volunteers each year. Guests enjoy a red-carpet entrance, a complimentary meal, games, treats, photos, live music, dancing, and an unforgettable evening where they are the stars of the show.

Honor for Heroes is proud to help carry this legacy forward alongside Area 14 Special Olympics. Together, we are not changing the dream that Sherry Fuller created. We are simply making sure it continues to inspire, celebrate, and bring smiles to generations still to come.
