Staff Sergeant James Hughes

James Hughes was born in Walhalla SC February 6, 1945, where he spent most of his life building a family and staying involved with his church. Hughes served in the Army fighting in Vietnam in the 4th Infantry Regiment as an Artilleryman between 1966 and 1968 and served in the reserves for several years after. He served honorably, receiving many medals and commendations for his valor.

He was a family man, always putting them in the center of his life and worked at the RC Cola factory for most of his life. Hughes died on April 9, 2020, only a couple of years after his wife. Before anyone was able to get headstones made for the loving couple, their daughter Kimberly also passed away leaving no other family.

When Honor for Heroes heard about this, they quickly got involved to make sure that one of our Heroes got the Recognition and honor they deserved! With SSG Hughes’ headstone being provided by the government Honor for Heroes had to facilitate the paperwork and bureaucracy to get his headstone created and delivered. Knowing the installation of his headstone and the wife’s headstone would not be covered by the government, Honor for Heroes was able to find donors willing to step in and help out to ensure this family was properly honored! Now both husband and wife have headstones.
